A Lavish Royal Wedding

As many lovely weddings as there are in the U.S., the Europeans really know how to put on a wedding – and particularly the royals.

Perhaps it isn’t a fair comparison given that they have access to so many beautiful cathedrals and castles, but regardless they seem to think of every small detail from the flower girl dresses to the tiara to the incorporation of local customs.

Last weekend was no exception when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria — “one of the world’s most eligible bachelors” — married his Dutch Canadian fiancé Sophie-Alexandra Evekink in a spectacular ceremony in Munich, followed by a reception at Nymphenburg Palace.

Prince Ludwig is the eldest son of Prince Luitpold and the great-great grandson of King Ludwig III, the last King of Bavaria in Germany (more on Bavaria below). Though the monarchy dissolved in the German Revolution of 1918 following World War I, the Bavarian royal family continues its ceremonial traditions.

Ms. Evekink is Singapore-born Dutch Canadian and a doctorate candidate at the University of Oxford, working on her Ph.D. in the Center for Criminology. Prince Ludwig will one day be the Head of the House of Bavaria.

From the photos, it looks like it was a perfect sunny day, and I thought the bride’s Reem Acra dress was sensational.

Where is Bavaria?

Bavaria is the largest state in Germany and the only one that shares the Alps. It is made up of four major vacation regions: There is Upper Bavaria with Munich, the highest Alpine peaks and picturesque lakes. Allgäu/Bavarian Swabia with its fairy-tale castle, unique mountain panoramas and a huge meteorite crater.”
Bavaria was for centuries one of the richest and most influential of the many smaller territories that made up the Holy Roman Empire. It was briefly an independent kingdom in the 19th century before it was incorporated into the newly unified Germany as a state in 1871.

Bavaria is a state in Germany, making up the south-east quarter of this central European country. It is Germany’s biggest state (Bundesland) with an area of 70,548 square kilometres (27,200 square miles). That’s about a fifth of Germany’s total land mass. It’s in Germany’s south-eastern quarter and has a population of about 12.5 million people.

“The finishing touch was the Bavarian Sapphire Floral Tiara, which was borrowed from her husband’s family.”
“Dressmaker Catarina von Lerchenfeld, a cousin of the groom, also designed a bespoke handkerchief for the church as ‘something blue’ woven from fabric which came from the bride’s grandmother.”
