English Countryside Perfection: The Newt, Somerset, England

The Newt, in Somerset, England

The recent news coverage of Prince Philip’s funeral in London (a sad day, but he lived a full life and I was so happy to see those royal brothers reunited) has got me thinking about traveling to England. And with that comes thinking about traveling to the English countryside, and in particular, this beautiful hotel I’ve been reading so much about in the last couple of years, The Newt. As the Sunday Times put it, Is the Newt hotel in Somerset Britain’s coolest place to stay?

With 17 acres of formal gardens, a world class restaurant, beautiful spa, and luxurious guest rooms, I’d love to find out.

For fans of The Holiday, Jane Austen, Downton Abbey, The Crown, Belgravia and basically anything Julian Fellowes touches, this hotel is made for us. And as it turns out, Somerset was also one of the filming locations for the recent Netflix hit show, Bridgerton, along with many others including Poldark, The Duchess, Remains of the Day, and Sense and Sensibility.

Another review of The Newt from CNN Traveler here and a few other British books, movies, shows and products for you below. To my fellow Anglophilers, enjoy!

A place to delight, with elegant rooms that have been restored and reimagined, our unique setting inspires garden-to-table dining, a garden-scented Spa and acres of space for adventure.

Hadspen House, built around 1690, captures the essence and warmth of a Georgian country home, with 23 individual bedrooms throughout the house and its Stable Yard. A short walk or cycle through the orchards, The Farmyard offers a further 17 bedrooms with relaxed rural charm.

If you’re like me and need a primer on UK geography, Somerset is in the southwestern side of the UK, about 2.5 hours from London. You can see London is the tiny pink dot in the southeastern section of the country, located in Middlesex.
Newcomer of the Year 2019: the Newt, Somerset — review | Travel | The Sunday Times
Emma was the last movie I saw in a theatre before the pandemic shutdown – I’ve watched it two more times since but I am glad I got to see it in the theatre, the footage is stunning.
House of Trelawney, a sprawling & fun novel about an English country estate and its inhabitants
The most perfect little cottage in The Holiday
Gosford Park, one of the original Julian Fellowes films
Dr. Thorne, a Julian Fellowes show from 2016 on Amazon Prime. 4 great episodes.
Far From the Madding Crowd, a great movie based on the famous Thomas Hardy novel
A Netflix remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film based on the novel Rebecca, by
Daphne du Maurier, was largely overlooked last year when it was released but I really enjoyed it – the footage of the British estate and countryside alone is worth it.
Sanditon is a great show on PBS based on Jane Austen’s unfinished last novel by the same name. An intriguing love story coupled with beautiful imagery of the British coastline. I read that Season 2 is filming now, which is great because I was not happy with the less than perfect ending.
RIP Prince Philip
